This week is bananas

by Rusty

Blogging will likely be light this week, as there is a lot going on, most of which I can’t blog about.

What I do know is that I probably want to do some boozing Friday night. Who’s in?

Remember this guy?

by Rusty

I‘m not going to boost this particular unscrupulous business operator’s search engine traffic by mentioning him or his site by name (or giving a link). Instead, I will refer you to this post (found via this post).

Apparently, this fellow has pissed off every blogger in St. Louis.

This might be funny in a way if said unscrupulous business operator wasn’t hoodwinking media companies into believing he is somehow out for the greater good, and profiting in the process. Like the Knoxville News-Sentinel, for example.

I think KNS entered into an agreement with said operator with the purest of intentions, based on what I’ve read. I’m generally a fan of what Jack Lail and other folks have been doing to bring KNS into the 21st century. He has a well-written blog, and the KNS often links to blogs (including Rocky Top Talk, where I contribute occasionally) in a way that’s mutually-beneficial to bloggers, KNS and KNS readers. They have blogs, podcasts, RSS feeds and — more importantly — appear to be training their people to understand how to use these tools effectively. It recently won an award for best site design and architecture for a reason.

However, I believe KNS associating with this particular operator is a mistake. The guy running it has gone out of his way to be an asshole to the people who provide all the content for his site, and doesn’t respect people’s wishes to be removed from the site. My site is still listed there despite me asking to have it removed at least four times.

Psychoanalyze this

by Rusty

I don’t remember very many of my dreams, but I do remember one I had last night.

The setting was a living room that looked sort of, but not exactly, like the one in my parents’ house where I grew up. There was blue carpeting, vintage 70s wood panel walls, and a brown leather chair and hassock like the one that was there when I was younger. It seemed bigger than the room I grew up in though, and the outside light came from different places and hit objects differently, giving me a feeling like when I encounter someone who knows me but I can’t place where I met them or remember their name.

There were three animals in the room: a baby pig, a baby chick, and a kitten. I was rubbing the baby pig’s belly while the kitten and chick ran around the room.

The second dog we had while I was growing up (who is still alive) was a Golden Retriever named Sophie. When she was a puppy, we kept her confined to the living room. Sometimes she would entertain herself by walking over to one side of the room, then rushing full speed, bounding over a couch and crashing into the wall side-first. Generally, she would do this when no one else was in the room, and we would know she was doing this after hearing a loud crash that sounded like a heavy box falling off the top of a book shelf.

In my dream, either the kitten or the pig (I can’t remember which now) started out like it was going to do the same thing, bounding into the wall. Only, instead of a crashing thud, the animal disappeared when it hit the wall and reappeared in another spot in the room.

The other animals followed suit, running into the teleporter and reappearing in other parts of the room several times. I felt something was amiss, so I warned them to stop playing with the teleporter. They ignored me, and eventually they went in and didn’t reappear.

When all the animals had disappeared, I searched the room and found the baby chick’s little orange leg under the couch.

Why you should floss daily

by Rusty

I spent two and a half hours this morning having a root scaling and planing done, which looks like this:

Scaling

Planing

(photos from this page)

I have early stage periodontal disease. It’s where crap gets lodged under your gumline and eats away at the bone keeping your teeth in place and inflames the gums. Left untreated, teeth will separate from the gums and fall out.

The solution is to shove a hook under your gums and clean out the crap (scaling) and to smooth your teeth so the gums can reaffix themselves (planing). Given time, with proper brushing and flossing and continued check-ups with professionals, the surrounding gums can heal enough to prevent further decay. But the bone is gone forever.

Prior to their gum and nerve spelunking, they gave me about 10 shots of novocaine. I felt like an animal that had escaped from the zoo and was being pelted with tranquilizer darts. The worst are the shots around the upper teeth because there’s little tissue there, even if your gums are totally healthy, and the needle is piercing/scraping a lot of bone.

Many people choose to stretch the procedure over two or more visits because of the unpleasantness, only having half or a quarter of their mouth done in one sitting. I had it all done in one sitting and stuck around for three fillings as well.

I hadn’t been to a dentist in over five years, partly because I didn’t have dental insurance until this year, and partly because I knew something like this procedure would be the result. I’m pretty good about brushing my teeth, but not so good about flossing. I will need to remedy that if I want to avoid going through this again.

Search strings

by Rusty

I got nothing today, so now I will rip off Tony’s idea and post some search strings people have used to find my site in the past 30 days:

I think these are pretty funny, but I get the feeling the people who find Tony’s site through search engines are still the weirdest and most desperate of everyone I know.

Moving, football, etc.

by Rusty

Blogging will be light for the next couple of weeks, as we’re moving this weekend and next. The situation with our current apartment has also become much more involved as of late, which unfortunately is about as much as I can say about it at the moment.

I am excited about the annual prison yard match between Tennessee and Florida coming up this weekend, though it’s hard to be optimistic about Tennessee’s chances given the performance in the first two games. My favorite thing that’s happened in Hate Week so far is this quote from Florida coach Urban Meyer:

“I have great respect for their personnel,” Meyer said. “They are definitely a top-five personnel group, there is no question.”

“They don’t overwhelm you with scheme, but with personnel” is my favorite coach speak phrase. It’s a subtle dig that implies “we have no respect for your coaching ability” without actually saying that.

The only thing I really have to go by leading into this game is past performance, which indicates this will probably be a close, ugly game. But it could get out of hand quickly if Florida stops the run early, as Tennessee has been very un-Tennessee-like in that department the past few years. The offensive line actually looks like it could be improved at run blocking this year, but the coaches have been giving up on the run earlier than in past seasons since David Cutcliffe became OC.

If NCAA 2008 on my Xbox 360 is any indication, Florida’s offense is going to put up about 550 yards, with 250 of them on the ground. That offense is fun to run, and when I play as Florida my tailback averages about 17 yards per carry.

You can just run that QB option all day, look for where the linebackers are cheating, and run the opposite direction with the tailback or Baby Rhino. Sometimes you’ll lose five yards, but then you can just pick up 15 on the next play. Throw a pass every fifth or sixth play, and it’ll probably go for 30 yards since the safeties will be cheating up by then. Audible to a run if they’re not creeping up. If they stack the line on a called run, audible to a tight end option, get your five yards, and live to fight another day.

When I play as Tennessee, it’s easy to throw for 300 yards, but 100 on the ground is a struggle. The offense is pretty accurate in Tennessee’s case at least, as I end up throwing to the fullbacks and tight ends and slot receivers on underneath routes a lot until the safeties creep up, then I can bust them on corner routes and slants from the slot receivers. But the running game is vanilla, without a lot of effective misdirection.

So, back to real life, both of the defenses are suspect. Like everyone else, I’m expecting at least 35 points out of both offenses, and 300 yards out of both quarterbacks. I think the difference is Tennessee’s run defense is softer, and they’ll abandon the run too early if they get down.

Also, FYI, if you’re in my NCAA Picks contest this year, we’re betting against the spread, not straight-up. That was confusing to a lot of people, including me.

Most of this cross-posted to my Rocky Top Talk diary

~The Wheeler High School Class of 1997 Reunion Committee

They expect people to pay $65 and the booze isn’t free. That’s highway robbery. I guess they wanted to weed out the people who were on the fence about going.

Me, I went to school at Tennessee because I wanted to get away from most of those people. So I’ll pass.

Since Twitter is down, I’ll post some advice here

by Rusty

If your stomach ever tries to tell you that the country fried steak lunch special at Landmark Diner is a good meal to order, don’t be fooled. Your stomach is a filthy lying slut.
