Does anybody else think this is a terrible idea?

by Rusty

From an Atlanta Business Chronicle article about AJC circulation department layoffs:

As part of the restructuring, the AJC will launch an E-edition — an online replica of the print newspaper. The paper said this will allow students to read, browse and search the AJC. As a result, it will develop its News For Kids program into an online platform beginning May 23. Eventually, the E-edition will be available to the larger market.

I can’t wait for them to put hyperlinks in the print edition. Then maybe I’ll buy a copy again.

Quote of the day

by Rusty

This should be obvious if you’ve read any newspapers or blogs today. From U.S. Senate candidate and DeKalb County CEO Vernon Jones. Emphasis mine:

“Obviously, the Democratic party loves to recruit losers,” Jones said. “In the past we lost both United States senate seats, we’ve lost the governor’s race, the lieutenant governor’s race, the secretary of state’s race, the last Democratic public service commission race. The Democratic party has constantly put up liberal candidates and they’ve lost election after election after election. And Vernon Jones and the people of Georgia want a winner.”

Another “You’re not wrong Walter. You’re just an asshole” moment. I don’t really understand what he’s trying to accomplish with that quote. No matter, I think the real outrage here comes later in the article:

Jones declined to take a position on Iraq until he studied the issue.

Are you fucking kidding me? This war has been going on for, what, five years now and you have no idea what you think? Say you support it, say you don’t, or hedge your bet and throw out the tired “I want to bring the troops home but we have to be responsible about it” line, but don’t tell me you need more time to study. Five years is plenty of goddamn time.

Chambers in trouble in District 81?

by Rusty

What the hell, let’s actually talk about some politics on here for a moment. I had a phone conversation with a conservative yesterday who believes Republican state Rep. Jill Chambers might actually be in trouble in her district against former DPG employee and blogger Chris Huttman.

I was (and still am) incredulous. We’ve seen Chambers dispatch a long line of challengers of varying competence and intelligence with relative ease against what seem like unfavorable demographics. She’s smart and tough, and plays politics Ty Cobb-style, with cleats out. She also breaks from party dogma often enough to make her ideological positions more palatable to her constituency. It’s tough to argue that a Democrat could accomplish more for that district in an all-Republican legislature.

What was said conservative’s reasoning? That Chambers was too close to Speaker Glenn Richardson, and that there will be fallout from aligning with him.

Richardson, as you probably know already, is largely viewed as responsible for the acrimony that has ground state government to a halt the past two years. I’d venture to say a state House candidate being associated with him is worth about as much as a U.S. House candidate being associated with George W. Bush. Which is to say nothing positive could come from it.

For good measure, we should also throw in the Obama candidacy will hurt metro Atlanta Republicans theory. The theory goes that Obama being the candidate would increase turnout among black voters, gay voters and urban liberals. Given that Obama took the Georgia primary by a landslide, and given that some polls have said the supporters of one candidate may have trouble voting for the other candidate, this theory may have some merit to it.

Could the combination of all these factors give Huttman a chance against Chambers?

Chris is a reader and comments on here from time-to-time, and I’m sure he’s got the demographics all worked out. I’d also love to hear from Rep. Chambers if she reads this. And from everyone else. What say you?

The New York Times: bigger, longer and uncut

by Rusty

Randy Lewis of the Georgia Daily Digest, whom you might also recognize as the most frequently-appearing conservative panelist on the Ga. Politics Podcast, had a quote in the New York Times about the soap opera going on at GDOT:

“On the scandal meter, this doesn’t make my needle stand up too much,” said Randy Lewis, a political analyst who runs the Web site GeorgiaPoliticalDigest.com. “Because it’s nothing compared to the rest of the sludge at D.O.T. and what has to be done there.”

I wonder if the Times just missed the double entendre.

Path of shame

by Rusty

This seems topical on Earth Day:

Here’s the description from YouTube:

Dekalb County is spending over a million taxpayer dollars, cutting down 1000 trees, and irreparably damaging Atlanta’s second oldest, largest, intact, mature hardwood forest sanctuary without community approval. Join the Three Forks Heritage Alliance in their efforts to stop the Path of Shame. Go to www.3forksalliance.org for more information.

Like I’ve written earlier, I think on the whole PATH does more good than harm. But I also believe the behavior of both PATH and the DeKalb Commission in this situation have been inexcusable and that this design doesn’t pass the smell test.

Ridiculous 11Alive promo

by Rusty

We were watching The Office Thursday night, and this 11Alive promo came on. I thought it was so ridiculous that it needed to be posted. This has inspired me to collect all the ridiculous local news promos I see and to compile them into a bigger video.

Sorry about the crappy letterboxing that occured there. Here’s a better Quicktime file you can watch on your desktop.

A solution for GDOT’s problems

by Rusty

You’re a state agency tasked with building all of Georgia’s roads and many of its other forms of transportation. Demand for “congestion relief” (widening roads) is at an all-time high, and demand for mass transit is increasing. You’re operating at a $7.5 billion deficit. Your chief who was supposed to clean up widely-acknowledged corruption and inefficiency within your agency recently revealed she’s having a relationship with a commissioner who cast the deciding vote to elect her. The commissioner is out, and she probably will be soon.

Things look bad. But cheer up. There’s a solution so obvious that it’s downright astounding that someone hasn’t thought of it first. What is it?

Insurance fraud, of course.

More specifically, insurance fraud involving Transformers.

All GDOT needs to do is to get a couple of Transformers to come in and rip out all of Atlanta’s roads and MARTA lines. We can claim act of God (or giant metal alien robot), collect all the insurance money, then use it to build a real mass transit system and better roads.

If we have access to an Autobot, we can just tell it there are Decepticons hiding under the roads and in the MARTA tunnels or something. If we have access to a Decepticon, we can just tell it flat out we want it to commit insurance fraud and offer it a cut. They’re evil, afterall. Either way, we need to get them to also destroy a few buildings so that it’s not totally obvious we’re just ripping up the infrastructure to collect the insurance.

You’re welcome.

Georgia State starting a football program

by Rusty

Like Grift, I am ambivalent about anything political lately. So let’s talk I-AA football.

To tell you the truth, I know very little about championship division football other than they have a playoff and that Appalachian State is a lot better than the two teams I’ve seen them play on TV. I know Georgia Southern was really good for a while and gave Georgia a hard time a few years ago in a game that was supposed to be a snoozer. I also know that Georgia State will announce its intention to start a football program today (watch it live here at 2 p.m.).

I’d suggest reading Tony Barnhart’s column for some more background. I agree with everything he wrote there, but am curious where they’ll actually play games (Barnhart thinks they should play in the Georgia Dome).

I’d like to add another suggestion to Tony’s list: schedule a lot of Thursday night games. Virginia Tech schedules a lot of Thursday games, which has garnered its program national exposure which it wouldn’t have received if it had to compete with 40 other games going on at the same time. Often, Virginia Tech and its opponent will be the only bowl division teams playing on a Thursday. I’m not going to skip watching a Tennessee game on TV to watch playoff division football (just as I don’t expect Georgia or Georgia Tech fans would skip watching their games), but I’d go to some games if I could take MARTA to them after work on a Thursday.

GSU will probably go through a few 0-11 seasons at first, but there’s enough talent in this state (even after UGA, GT, and Southern have had their shots) for them to put together a watchable team if they go about this the right way. It’s not unrealistic to think that in four or five years the games could be more fun to watch than Falcons games.

I’m excited about the possibility of having a I-AA team here for what I think would be the same reasons I’d be excited if there was a minor league baseball team in the city. I hope they get it right.
