You should read this post by Tom Richmond, one of the “Usual Gang of Idiots” who draws for MAD Magazine. Tom started his first business, a caricature concession stand, in Underground Atlanta 18 years ago and had to close it down on Dec. 31. It’s a poignant summary of Underground’s evolution over the past couple of decades.
I’ll link to it even though I resent this passage in his bio, explaining why he left Atlanta:
Homesickness and a general distaste for grits and chicken fried steak caused them to consider moving back home. Then came the day Anna uttered her first “y’allâ€Â. This resulted in her clapping her hand over her mouth, hurried packing and a panicked retreat back to Minnesota.
Yeah, well, Minnesota can suck my left teat… the one that’s not iced over from freezing-ass cold (it’s cold there, right? Has Minnesota done anything else distinctive that I can turn into a punchline?).
Regional ribbing aside, it’s long past time to send Underground to the glue factory.
