They expect people to pay $65 and the booze isn’t free. That’s highway robbery. I guess they wanted to weed out the people who were on the fence about going.
Me, I went to school at Tennessee because I wanted to get away from most of those people. So I’ll pass.

I’ve got two more years before I need to make that decision. But dude, $65/person? You’re right; that’s ridiculous. I’m still in touch with enough of my former classmates that I’m going to be interested in getting together with many of them in ‘09, but if they tried to pull something like this, I imagine a sizeable faction would revold and hold their own unofficial shindig on the same weekend.
Mine’s next year and I forsee a similar post in my future.
Recently helped with my reunion, and most of the $65 most likely comes from renting the facility and hors d’oeuvres.
Surprising how much that part of it costs before you include alcohol.
You should go, RGM. Half the fun is seeing all of the former cocky BMOC’s that have failed miserably in life.
I went to my 10 year reunion for Pope just a few weeks ago and had a great time, much better than I thought I would. I presume from the wording of your invitation that this was put together by Reunitus, an online company that organizes HS reunions. The 65 bucks seemed like a ripoff but, what the hell.
What I find most amusing is that they put the address of the school on the invitation. Why would they need to tell a bunch of people where their own high school is?
I’m with Trackboy. I felt pretty much the same as you do but a friend convinced me to go to my 10 year reunion. It was a blast. I’ve been to all but one since then.
The thing I find fascinating is that it is so rare to find yourself in a roomful of people who are all the same age (well, except for spouses, but you get the idea). And, it is interesting to see who’s gone bald, who has five children and a miserable marriage. My favorites are the bookish, shy, uncool ones who are now doing something really fabulous and look fantastic.
Anyway, $65 does seem like a lot, but it probably goes (like Trackboy sez) to the event space and all that.
I went to my 10-year for Pope, uh, 3 years ago and, while I knew it would be entertaining at the very least, I ended up having a blast. I see no one has used that tired old line, “I’m still in touch with everyone I want to be in touch with,” which is great because half the fun is re-connecting with people you didn’t think you’d care to re-connect with.
Also, mine was $90 per person. Here’s what you do: put on a suit (your invite says cocktail attire; don’t be the one guy in jeans / shorts), show up at the Buckhead Ballroom, and simply don’t pay. Don’t make a scene or anything, just casually hang out. Ours was at the W Hotel by Perimeter Mall. There was a girl from the reunion company manning the nametag table and I just breezed right by her into the ballroom. Piece of cake. And saving $90 made those $5 beers go down much more easily.
Heh, I used that line on Nikki’s blog.
Stiffing them the fee is an intriguing idea, but we also happen to be moving this weekend. And Jen’s birthday is this weekend. And the UT-Florida game is this weekend.
I was not a happy high-schooler, but went to my 10th anyway. It was so fascinating that I have gone to everyone since — and at my age that’s a lot. You NEED to go. Perspective is the most important thing in life and nothing gives you perspective like a HS reunion. Also, seeing what people have become and are on their way to becoming is a great lesson. DON’T MISS THIS!
Thanks for the heads up. I’ll steer clear of Wild Wing this Friday.
I didnt go to my 10th, 20th and likely wont go to my 25th (in 2009). To me, its like returning to car wreck to look at the crushed bodies. My wife did go to hers and enjoyed hers immensely…..
I’m not going to mine next year, and the message I’ve already instructed be sent in my place will probably get me arrested.
