The ceremony itself was fine. The pastor from her old church in Montgomery (Heritage Baptist) gave a (thankfully, said my dad) mostly-platitude-free eulogy. There was some inevitable proselytizing, which always bugs me at funerals, but at least in her case I know she would have been just fine with that.
We ate at Chris’ Hot Dogs in downtown Montgomery for a late lunch today afterward. They make some pretty tasty hot dogs with a great don’t-call-it-barbecue sauce. Should have photographed those, but forgot. Here are some photos of the facade I snapped with my cell phone camera:
My dad showed me around the downtown area, which I don’t ever remember going through during my visits there. We passed several landmarks from his childhood (and ate at one, the aforementioned Chris’), and also Dexter Avenue Baptist Church, where Martin Luther King, Jr. pastored from 1954 to 1960.
I’m exhausted, and miss Amber. I left my truck at a repair shop here in Scarietta to replace a bum alternator while we were in Alabama. It was ready this afternoon, but we weren’t back in time to pick it up. I’m going to stay here tonight to save me a trip tomorrow. Also, I’m taking the day off from work tomorrow to recover.

I miss you too! I’ll be so happy to see you tomorrow afternoon.
And look… the Everyman Conference, based on Every Young Man’s Battle and all the rest of those books, is coming to Heritage Baptist!
Sorry about your loss.
The only hot dog I’ve ever actually liked was at Gray’s Papaya in NYC. Excepting there, I don’t consider hot dogs to be food as I understand the definition.
