As has been widely reported elsewhere, the AJC is undergoing a massive restructuring. Here’s a collection:
- Atlanta Political Party: AJC meets on its fate
- Blog for Democracy: AJC “Realignment” Announced
- Peachtree Screed: Huge shakeout at AJC and More on AJC bloodbath
- Poynter: Memo from Journal-Constitution editor Wallace
- Spacey Gracey: AJC To Be Messed With. Expect More Fake Blogs.
This is a watershed event for metro Atlanta media coverage, and I have no fuckin’ clue how it will play out. Sorry for the lack of insight. I bet you’re wondering why you’re paying me right now.

bottom line, unless the AJC starts actually COVERING news better, it won’t make a bit of difference. As much as it annoys me, I do think folks like Perdue have some salient points. The AJC tries to play “gotcha” journalism with their political coverage, and often don’t get particularly in depth into a story.
There is a gap between the current AJC “broad brush” attempt at news coverage and Creative Loafings “we’re too cool for school” angle. CL will occasionally dig into something a bit, but there is the obnoxious distain for everything and everyone that drives me nuts. Someone needs to do some real reporting for once.

Ben,
Yeah, pretty much. What’s frustrating to me is occasionally reading a really good piece of reporting (Ty Tagami at the AJC writes really good urban development stories, I think the Political Insider column is often pretty good) but then having to wait weeks before reading another one. Most of what the AJC publishes is horseshit. The sports section is a joke these days.
And the Loaf appears to be experimenting with a cheesy evening news approach to headline writing and cover design. It kind of makes me want to hurl.
I’m sticking with my Enquirer until they all work their shit out.
Let’s all get together and start a tabloid! I’ve been watching that show Dirt too much.
It takes a good person to admit not knowing what this story means for the future of coverage in Atlanta. There are enough negative comments to go around.
I pays for meat hearts, and I gets meat hearts. Ain’t nothin’ wrong with the system.
