This site has some history about the building. I appear to be in the minority relative to commenters on that site and all the news coverage I read in that I actually think it would have been neat to repurpose it instead of tearing it down. I was first acquainted with it when I accompanied Amber to her drug test for her current job, which was conducted in a suite inside. It’s unfortunate that it was already boarded up when I took these, because I wanted to get some photos of the lobby, which had these ornate 1950s designs that I don’t really know how to describe.

Fuck the internet. Everybody thinks they have something to fucking say.
And what the fuck’s up with this not calling her the GDGF anymore, godfuckit? I go away for a month and you people get all faggy on me.
I’m all for saving old buildings, but I must admit, this one is pretty ugly.
The style is unique, and you should’ve seen the inside of it. Some very cool 1950s details that you just don’t see many places anymore.
I used to think it was ugly just because of the two sides w/ no windows, but over time (esp. after I’d been inside), I came to appreciate it. And, regardless of what we might personally think of it, it’s another tie to the past that’s being done away with (like the Williams Printing Company building, which makes me even sadder than this one).
Sigh. I am a softie for preserving our shared history thru architecture.
I think that was the old First Atlanta building, and then after that, Wachovia, no? If so, I remember my mom talking about it, how cool it was — and therefore it had to be pretty damn cool because my mom just doesn’t notice stuff like that. I could be making this up out of pieces of my memory, but I seem to recall there is a beam somewhere in the roofish area with a bunch of signatures on it? I could be hallucinating. I will ask her tomorrow and report back.
anyone know how or when they’re going to be taking it down? i heard implosion, but it’s only hearsay - i don’t know how often that kind of demolition happens in Atlanta.
I am generally in favor of preserving older buildings and trying to re-do them instead of tearing down…. but holy crap that thing is ugly. I was way too excited when I saw the demolition sign when I drove by a few weeks ago.
I’m all for preserving ties to the past, but I’m not sure if that particular era in Atlanta’s architecture is what I’m interested in spending my time preserving. Maybe the building was uber-cool inside, and I’m a total jerk - I am only juding from the outside and the total wreck that it makes the corner it stands on.
It is uber-cool inside. And there are a lot of details on the outside, too, that you wouldn’t notice just driving by.
Well, I did like the facade. However, what they are planning will be a much better use for the area. I had the chance to go inside the building. It was old and dated. Neat, never the less. I too wish they could have refurbished the outside appearance and done something a little more. However, the building did not fit the historic area and really, even in its time, was an eyesore to the community and area. Look across the street. A beautyful church, standing the test of time. Acrss from that, an example of Modern Man. A bulky unoriginal eyesore to the community. If this were down town, I say leave it. But this is Midtown, full of art and culture, history and pride. We deserve a building that fits better in the community…. Who am i kidding… I wanna see it blow up!!
I saw the implosion of the Omni and it was pretty cool…very dusty though. I am looking forward to be there in the morning to see this implosion.
Too bad we are not imploding ugly parking garages instead!!!
Well the buildings that are going up in the its place are gonna be pretty amazing. I’m sure everyone will be more excited about the change when new construction is underway. That whole area of town (ponce de leon) is trying to be revitalized and that was one of major steps. And for the ugly parking garages that would soon change as well with all the new construction going underway in atlanta, they will soon all be demolished and rebuilt in a manner that would be incorporated with the overall design of the building. So just be patient. Atlanta is growing faster than any city in the US. A lot of cities have been haulted on new construction, for the primary reason of not enough interest or growth in that city. And Atlanta is still striving.
